Building a Generation of Confident and Informed Girls
School : SMK Bandar Tun Hussein Onn 2
Date : 3 December 2025
Menses Health Organisation (MHO) had the incredible opportunity to deliver our Positive Period Classroom (PPC) at SMK Bandar Tun Hussein Onn 2. We were warmly welcomed by 70 enthusiastic students, aged 14 and 18, each arriving with a blend of curiosity and eagerness to break down the long-standing stigmas surrounding period. This session was thoughtfully designed not only to educate but to inspire a deep sense of confidence and self-awareness. By fostering an open dialogue, we aimed to transform what is often a “taboo” topic into a comfortable, normal conversation that every young woman feels empowered to join.
The heart of the workshop focused on providing practical, life-changing knowledge that goes beyond the standard biology lesson. We guided the students through the complexities of female anatomy and the necessary skill of tracking their menstrual cycles, turning a monthly “surprise” into a predictable part of their routine. Hygiene was another cornerstone of our discussion; we didn’t just talk about cleanliness, but provided specific demonstrations on the proper, respectful way to dispose of sanitary pads. To ensure the girls felt their best throughout their cycles, we also dived into period-specific nutrition, highlighting how certain nutrients, like iron and omega-3 can help manage energy levels and soothe discomfort.
One of the most memorable transitions of the day occurred during our hands-on menstrual product demonstration. For many students, this was a breakthrough moment as they saw menstrual cups, tampons, and menstrual discs up close for the very first time. What began as shy giggles and hesitant reflects quickly evolved into active participation and a flood of thoughtful questions. The room buzzed with excitement as the girls realized they have a wide range of options beyond the conventional sanitary pad, giving them the agency to choose the care that best fits their bodies and lifestyles.
As we addressed each question and debunked common myths, the atmosphere in the room shifted from initial uncertainty to one of total empowerment. The PPC at SMK Bandar Tun Hussein Onn 2 succeeded in creating a supportive, judgment-free sanctuary where every student felt seen, heard, and respected. This impactful journey toward menstrual equity was made possible by the generous support of PopoMama, whose commitment to empowering young girls through knowledge and care is truly inspiring. By the end of the day, these 70 young girls walked away more informed and more in control of their period journeys. Together, let’s keep the conversation going, let’s talk periods!
